Hydrant Flushing starts this week

The City of Lethbridge has started flushing fire hydrants this week beginning with North Lethbridge. Crews will be working in the Sherring Industrial area for approximately one week, followed by Uplands.

Residents can watch for tax notices in their mailboxes. The 2013 Assessment and Tax Notices were mailed to all City of Lethbridge owners of residential property. The City is asking residents to review their notice and call the Assessment and Taxation office at 403-320-3950, if they have any questions.

The city’s next 10-year capital budget will aim to fulfill City Council’s commitment to taking care of existing community facilities while also committing nearly $55 million for construction of a major new aquatics centre by 2017.
Residents of Lethbridge are invited to register to share their photography skills, compete in cribbage, race in 5 and 10 km runs, or put together teams to play 3 on 3 basketball, rugby or beach volleyball. In total 18 competitive events will be taking place from July 3 to 6 in Taber, for this year’s Southern Alberta Summer Games, and all ages and levels of competition are needed to represent Lethbridge at the Games. Deadline to register is June 4 at 4:30 p.m.

As rattlesnakes emerge after a winter in hibernation, the City of Lethbridge is providing information to residents about the key role rattlesnakes play in our ecosystem, particularly to the rodent population and what residents should know.

It is with great sadness that the Lethbridge Fire Department announced the passing of a valued member. Captain Jon Enander passed away on April 28 after a battle with cancer related to the work of firefighting. Captain Enander was an active member of the department and his untimely death is considered to be in the line-of-duty.

The City of Lethbridge will be replacing all sidewalks adjacent to the new Casa building beginning on Monday, April 22. This work will take approximately three weeks to complete and will include a new driveway and wheelchair ramps in preparation for the opening of Casa.

Average single-family property tax bill to increase to meet City budget and provincial education tax requirements
The property tax bill for an average single-family home in Lethbridge will go up by $43 this year. City Council implemented this previously-approved tax increase by approving a new tax bylaw, as required each year under provincial law.

The City of Lethbridge's annual Spring Chipping Program for branch collection begins Monday, April 15.
To have your pruned branches collected, please stack them in the same location where your waste is collected (i.e. front or alley) but away from your waste collection cart, with all cut ends facing one direction by 7:00 a.m. on April 15.

Street sweeping will begin on Monday, April 15. This year the South Side will be swept first, followed by the West and North Sides. The first neighbourhoods being swept are Prairie Arbour Estates, Southridge, Sandstone, and Southgate.

The City of Lethbridge finished 2012 on solid financial footing, according to an unaudited Year End Financial Report presented today to the City Council members meeting as Finance Committee.

The City of Lethbridge has began conducting an annual census count. Residents can go to www.lethbridge.ca/census and complete their census information online before census takers start knocking on doors April 6. The City census is quick, convenient, and confidential.

The City of Lethbridge Yard Waste Recycling Site reopens on April 1. The yard waste recycling site, offers residents of Lethbridge an additional choice for managing grass clippings, leaves, branches (up to eight inches in diameter), and garden waste.
