Finding a Forever Home: Your Pet Adoption Stories

Have you adopted or fostered a pet? Here’s your chance to share your story with us.

My family is big on pets, especially dogs. Growing up, I've had at least two dogs in my life at all times. Once my family moved to our acreage, it was fitting to add a cat to the family, not only for our pleasure but to keep the house free from mice!

One day, my father was working and found a kitten near one of the grain elevators. She was abandoned, no more than a month old, with bright orange fur puffing out in every direction. Almost immediately, he was under her spell of adorableness and he brought her straight home. When the rest of the family met her, we knew she was going to stay with us.

Once she got some food in her she really began to show her personality, and it was time to pick a name. We tossed around a few generic names but nothing seemed to fit until I came up with Elle–short for elevator, so we'd always remember how she came to us.

We started fostering 2 kittens right before Christmas and now we love them so much that we are adopting them in the next week! It was a great way to make sure they were the right fit for our home! Thanks to Last Chance Cat Ranch for helping us out with finding the right friends for us!

My wife, bless her soul, is a bleeding heart at the best of times. But when her brother in Seattle had one of his 3 dogs suddenly come down with a "personality disorder", she was first in line to provide a new home for his canine conundrum. "Maya" was the mildest of yellow labs. A swwet mut if there ever was one. But she had had enough of the two mini dogs that shared quarters with her and not that I could blame her, she had an all-to-violent encounter with them... twice. So a new home was the obvious solution (or a dog whisperer.. no wait, they tried that). Anyway, long story short, she now lives with us, north of the 49th. It seems that the cold winters and the distinct lack of little dogs in our home has soothed her nerves and now she spends as much quality time lounging on or near my wife. I am quite certain I moved down the totem pole a position when she moved in. Man's best friend? Really? I'll have to think about that...

After buying a house with my boyfriend, I truly realized how much he was never home. Our house was kind of in a 'sketchy' area of town, so sitting home alone at night 3 or 4 times a week was not very fun. I have always grown up with lots of pets, and felt that I needed a four legged friend to keep me company. After going to all the pet stores, and ruling out getting a puppy, it was time to look at the shelters. The Humane Society was closed the day I went looking, so I ended up at the pound. They didn't have very many dogs at the time, but it only took one. The most beautiful, and sad dog I've ever seen captured my heart. When the bylaw officer took him out of the cage to play with, he turned into a completely different dog. Happy and excited, with the cutest face that actually showed his expressions quite well (and still does). After begging my boyfriend to let me get him, we brought him home. We quickly learned he had been beaten in his previous home as he cowered down when you reached a hand out to pet him. We also found out it was most likely a male, and still to this day (2 years later) he is still sketchy around some men. We have worked out most of his behavioral problems, its taken a lot of love, and a little blood. He is no doubt my dog, as he still is insecure around my boyfriend, and will not let him get near the dog food, while i can walk up and grab a hand full. Even through all the battles, he is the best dog in the world. He is a husky boarder collie cross, so he has some pretty big chompers, which adds to his charm when his lips get stuck on them and either give him snaggle tooth, or make him look like hes smiling. Its even been said he has "too much personality for one dog". He is my best friend.
