Do You have a Forever Home for One of Us?
Thinking of adopting a pet? Why not look to one of the local shelters or pet rescues first?
The reality of stray and abandoned animals in Lethbridge may not be as obvious as it should be. Shelters like the Lethbridge Animal Shelter may take in anywhere from 400 to 1,000 animals a year. With so many abandoned animals there is a cat or dog for everyone just waiting to be adopted.
As Barb Grodzicky, Manager of the Lethbridge & District Humane Society explains, "We have cats and dogs of every age, from kittens to puppies, to older, more mature animals. There's an animal for everyone, at any given time."
For those unsure about adoption, fostering an animal is also an option. Foster home volunteers allow for the animal to be cared for and loved in their home for one week to the rest of the animal's life.

Mysterio (Lethbridge Animal Shelter: http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/AB72.html) is a 1½ to two-year-old black and white collie cross. He has been recently neutered, and is good with other dogs and people; however, we're not so sure about cats. Mysterio needs a family willing to set some rules, and provide him with lots of exercise. He would be great on a farm or with an active family. Photo: Dave Henley, City of Lethbridge Senior Bylaw Officer, and Lethbridge Animal Shelter Volunteer, Murray Bourassa, with Mysterio |

FeBee (Prairie Pit Bull Rescue: http://www.prairiepitbullrescue.com) is a two to three-year-old pit bull, with a very gentle and snuggly personality, and she adores kids. She is house and crate trained, spayed, and up-to-date on her shots. FeBee came to us from Los Angeles, CA. "Sascha (Lethbridge PAW Society: http://www.pawsociety.com) is the reason people want to get a cat," says Sascha's foster mom Katherine. What better endorsement could a little feline get? At just over a year old, Sascha has been spayed and vaccinated, and is ready for a permanent home. She has fun playing with the resident kitten but especially enjoys the relationship she shares with her foster parents. She is a well-socialized little lady, and gentle with the foster parents' young toddler. Sascha entered the PAW Society's adoption program in October, 2011, and, like all the other deserving pets featured here, is patiently waiting to be chosen by her special someone. Theo (Prairie Dog Canine Rescue: http://prairiedogcaninerescue.blogspot.com) was found tied up to Don and Bernice's trailer in the middle of the night. Theo is an amazing little dog, exceptionally quiet, laid-back, and great not only with kids, but with dogs of all sizes and cats too. Theo is approximately three years old, neutered, and up-to-date on his vaccinations. Photo: Bernice and Donald Curle, with Theo |

Lulu (Purrfect Endings: (http://www.adoptapet.com/shelter73802-pets.html) is a 3½-month-old tortoiseshell, one of Luna's three babies. Lulu is sweet and very active. |

Simon (Purrfect Endings: (http://www.adoptapet.com/shelter73802-pets.html) is approximately four months old. He has short hair with the spots and the colouring of a Bengal. Simon was found under some stairs in Cardston. When he came to Purrfect Endings he was extremely tiny and very, very weak. The vets did not think he would actually survive. We bottle-fed him for a while, and then when he was stronger we put him with Luna. Again, it is thanks to this wonderful mom that Simon is alive today. He is very stunted, but he seems healthy. He is extremely active, and he loves to wrestle with his sisters Lulu and Midge. |

Born in August, 2011, Rocky (Lethbridge PAW Society: http://www.pawsociety.com), has learned a lot, but is still very much a kitten. This is the perfect age for bonding with that special human. A young Siamese cross with tan patches, blue eyes, and no tail, Rocky loves people. He was socialized from the moment he was rescued. He's curious, easy-going and very friendly. There wouldn't be much of a problem bringing him into a home that already has cats either. He's not worried by a bustling family, nor does he mind the quiet (as long as he has you for a friend). Rocky has been neutered and double vaccinated. |

We've only had Hunter (Windy City: www.windycityrescue.com) for less than a week, but we are already seeing drastic changes. When Hunter first came to us, he wouldn't even come in the house. He had never been in a house, so we had to coach him in and down the stairs. Now, he has no problems coming in the house as well as making himself at home. Hunter may look like a big boy, but he is still a puppy. He loves to chew on squeaky toys and bones and far he hasn't chewed on anything in the house that he shouldn't (fingers crossed it stays that way!). He can be very hyper and excited at times (like when people come to visit him), but calms down within minutes. Amazingly enough for a dog that had never been in a house, Hunter is house-trained! He hasn't had any accidents in the house and will cry to be let outside when he needs to go. He is also great in the car. He just sits nicely in the back seat and watches the world go by out the window. Hunter gets along great with other dogs and people. We haven't kid or cat tested him yet though. We don't anticipate a problem with kids (although his rambunctious moments may be a bit much for some kids) but how he'll be with cats is anybody's guess at this point. Hunter is a very happy guy who always has a smile on his face! He'd love to put a smile on yours too. |

Luna (Purrfect Endings: (http://www.adoptapet.com/shelter73802-pets.html) is approximately two years old, and was rescued from a local trailer park with her four-month-old kitten, who has since been adopted. Shortly after her rescue, six, five-day-old kittens were found in a local yard, and Luna accepted them as her own, later surprising all of us by giving birth to four more kittens! Not too long after that she again accepted another very weak, sickly baby, named Simon. Luna is the Mother Teresa of cats. She has saved so many lives, and now it's her turn to find some happiness. Luna is very good with both cats and dogs. We want so much for someone to welcome her into both heart and home, and give her the love and caring she so deserves. |

Lucy (Windy City: www.windycityrescue.com) is a very sweet seven-year old shih tzu that was seized for neglect and taken to the Calgary Humane Society. She was so matted that you couldn't even see her eyes, and her nails had grown over the pads of her feet. At the shelter, she wasn't coping well, so they asked us to take her into a foster home. Now in Lethbridge, freshly groomed and in a quiet home environment, we have discovered what an adorable, sweet dog she is! She loves squeaky toys, and loves to follow humans around the house. If you invite her into your lap, she cuddles right up, and looks up adoringly into your eyes. It's the cutest thing! She doesn't bark, whine or beg for food, and will only jump up on furniture if you invite her. She sleeps beside the bed all through the night without a peep, although she would love to be on the bed if you allowed it. She doesn't require a crate, but will go in if there is a treat involved, and doesn't make a peep until you let her out. She is completely housetrained, but doesn't ask to go out. You just have to let her out a few times a day, and she'll hold it until you do. Lucy doesn't require much exercise, so a short walk a day would be perfect for her. She's been to the dog park, and is great off leash. She's the type of dog that will follow you to get the mail or take out the garbage, but wouldn't dare venture off alone. The leash is a new thing for her, but she has no interest in running ahead, so she's easy to walk on leash. Although she is near perfect, her past shines through in her fear of men. She is extremely friendly and affectionate around women, but prefers to avoid men if at all possible. In fact, she may nip if they approach too quickly. She doesn't mean to hurt them, she just wants to keep them away. We think that she will warm up to men eventually, but it will take time and patience. We also think she would be best in a no-kids home, as she seems to do best in a quiet, laid back home. Overall, Lucy is pretty darn adorable and has a cute, spunky personality. We are excited for her to begin this new chapter in her life–a loving home and lots of attention! She's been waiting for this for a long time! |
UPDATE: Juliette (Lethbridge & District Humane Society: http://humanehaven.ab.ca), Briar (Lethbridge PAW Society: http://www.pawsociety.com), Wendell and Little Ed (Last Chance Cat Ranch: http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/AB52.html), and Ellie and Taco (Windy City: www.windycityrescue.com) have been adopted!! But don't let that stop you from visiting the websites of these two groups to see who else might be looking for their forever home!
