It’s a New Year with New Stories and New Adventures
Happy New Year everyone! Now that the Christmas–or shall I say holiday!–season has passed, we are all getting back to our normal routines. For me, that means doing a lot less spending and eating. Not that I don't enjoy going broke and getting fat, but from Halloween until the end of December it seems like that's all I'm doing, and it gets a little exhausting. What didn't help our wallets was the furnace and bathroom sink in our house breaking down before I finished all the holiday shopping. Nothing like shelling out a few hundred dollars in the midst of buying everyone you know presents. But with that said, last year is over and 2012 is going to be a whole new adventure.
A lot has been going on in my life and in the life of the magazine. First of all, I've started a new history series called "Historic Spaces and Places in Southern Alberta." That means I won't be writing about any more ghost towns, but we will get to explore six registered historic places in Southern Alberta. The first place I wanted to feature was the Gushul Studio in the Crowsnest Pass. I had visited the studio years before and remembered the building immediately when I started researching interesting places for this series. The large glass windows on the ceiling make it unlike any other building around. People will definitely know the building I am talking about if they have ever visited Blaimore and noticed this structure. It can't be confused with another.
The glass windows were very important in the design of the building as it was used as a photography studio by Thomas Gushul in the 1920s until he passed away in 1962. He was a famous photographer in the Crowsnest Pass who took pictures of nature, families, weddings, and mining locations.
As you must have noticed, we've also launched a newly designed Lethbridge living website. Hopefully, it will provide you with a more functional space and there's the added bonus of a comments section where we really want to hear any feedback on our articles, or get your submissions for things such as contests or hear your stories about topics like pet adoption. I even added my own pet adoption story so check it out!
With the start of 2012 I've also realized this is going to be my craziest year to date as far as my life goes after I leave the office. I think that's what you can call what I've been doing after work. At the end of April I'll be embarking on motherhood. An exciting time indeed, but filled with many changes. Most of which I'm sure I don't even understand yet. The adventures have only just begun!
