Gift-wrap, Coffee and Hives

A week into my practicum with Lethbridge living and I no longer have mild panic attacks when I walk through the front door.

As a second-year print journalism student at Lethbridge College, I don't normally consider shyness a character trait of mine. However, something about working with an actual magazine initially inspired some fear.

On my first day I had countless worries, ranging from my choice of footwear to my lack of knowledge when it comes to coffee. In my mind, there is a direct correlation between interns and coffee. For the record, if given the choice, I would rather do a shoe-run than coffee-run. I can gladly tell you the difference between a loafer and a sneaker, but when it comes to a mochaccino and macchiato, I get hives.

In my short time with Lethbridge living, I feel I have already learned so much about the world of magazines. Between editing stories for the next issue, wrapping gifts for the Christmas party and reviewing publications who have applied for Alberta Magazine Publishers Association membership, I'm beginning to look at magazines with an entirely new approach. Thanks to my new found knowledge, instead of admiring the gorgeous holiday decor in my most recent Style at Home copy, I find myself debating the editorial/advertisement ratio.

One of the most pleasant surprises with Lethbridge living (after realizing Moxie's was just down the street) was the cheery atmosphere in the office. Although I've never worked at a magazine before, I don't imagine it's possible they all have the wonderful feeling of family amongst staff that Lethbridge living does. I think this can be credited for calming my new-girl nerves.

Before starting my practicum, the opportunity to observe magazine production and be involved in the process, was the aspect I was most eager to learn. The fact that I've already gained such valuable insight within my first week, hints at a wonderful future for my practicum. And besides, anytime I'm asked to play with wrapping paper, I automatically consider the experience a success.

Thankfully, I've yet to suffer any coffee-induced anxiety.
